Outcome and Results
The ESA Lunar Caves System Studies aimed to advance European capabilities associated with the exploration of the subsurface of the Moon through novel and innovative technologies. Lunar caves are one of the most fascinating frontiers of exploration on the Moon, allowing access to tens of metres of subsurface environments where the geological records are pristine, and the stable environmental conditions could be favourable for human habitats.
Following the Sysnova Lunar Challenge on the OSIP platform, five studies were selected on different mission scenarios and enabling systems. Two systems (RoboCrane and Daedalus) were then combined into an integrated mission scenario in the Lunar Caves CDF study, integrating the inputs of the external consortia with ESA strategy and expertise. The CDF study was extremely formative for the consortia, in identifying gaps not yet addressed (e.g., detailed operational timelines) and allowing them to perform trade-offs through parametric models of their system. The CDF study was also very beneficial to ESA in creating models for lunar subsurface environments and generating roadmaps for related enabling technologies (e.g., equipment and materials). The CDF study highlighted not only the feasibility of lunar cave exploration, but also the opportunity that such an endeavour would represent for science, public engagement and inspiration, as well as prestige for being on the frontline of pushing space exploration beyond the surface of the Moon. These conceptual studies represent a first important step in lunar cave exploration, which, in the future, will have to be further refined in terms of mission strategy and required systems.
Following the OSIP Campaign and the CDF study, a topical team made up of experts was established to further support the development of a strategy that includes lunar caves in the framework of European lunar exploration.
