Space Technology Transfer to ESA sites and building sector - Call for ideas

Congratulations! If you have been shortlisted for the second phase of this call for ideas! This means that your idea not only met the initial criteria for selection, but also positively surprised for its originality and adequacy to the scope of the call. In this second phase, we are going to ask you to further develop your idea by providing us with more, quantitative details. In doing so, you will have the possibility of better convincing us of its feasibility of implementation, and therefore of its applicability to the building sector.

In this second phase, you are provided with a template for the submission of your idea. This template gives you freedom of expression, meaning the possibility of elaborating your idea in the way that better suits its characteristics and the focal points you wish to highlight.

To get this template, please follow these steps:

    1. Log in on the website ideas.esa.int
    2. Go to your idea and click on the burger menu at the top right side of the page
    3. Click on "Edit Idea"
    4. Under section "Detailed Proposal", your can download the template and upload your detailed proposal.

In order to guide you through your elaboration, you can refer to a set of questions reported in the “Guidelines” section of the template. These questions highlight the topics that are important to us, and will help us having a better understanding of your idea and of its adequacy to the scope of the call. Please note that, depending on the nature and/or TRL of your idea, it might be that not all questions can be answered/covered in your dissertation. However, we invite you to consider them, together with the answers that could enrich your proposal.

In this phase of the call, supporting documentation is also welcomed. Therefore, feel free to attach additional documents that could help us better defining and evaluating your idea.

The timeline for phase 2 is reported below:

    • 22 October 2019 – 20 November 2019

Ideas elaborated on by giving more details of the defining criteria (Technology Readiness Level, ESA identity enhancement, environmental performance level, wellbeing level, contribution to safety in the building sector, financial performance of the ideas).

Community voting and feedback are welcome.

    • 20 November 2019 – 20 December 2019

Evaluation by board of experts on Space Technology Transfer and building sector, from inside the ESA community (Project Team, civil engineers and architects in FM Department, etc.) and outside (consultants).

Following evaluation, the submitters of the selected ideas will take into account the feedback provided on the OSIP. This could include recommendations for merging different proposals.

    • February-March 2020

Rewarding of proposers of the selected ideas.

This Campaign is open for submissions by participants registered in one of ESA's Member States, Associate Member States or Cooperating States  (link).

For general conditions of participation in this campaign, please refer to the document attached (OSIP General Conditions of Participation).

Please note that restrictions exist for certain implementation paths, e.g. ESA procurement actions are restricted to entities eligible for doing business with ESA (see here).

In addition to the provisions in the General Conditions of Use of the Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP) (e.g. article VI) and the General Conditions of Participation to Campaigns and Channels organised by ESA in OSIP (e.g. article 4.3) any ideas will be excluded which:

    • violate basic physical principles
    • don't clearly address the campaign topic
    • don't make use of any space infrastructure or space data
    • contain misleading or wrong information

You will find below a list of the criteria applicable (where appropriate) to identify ideas that match requirements for the ESA Headquarters, other ESA sites or the wider building sector:

    • Technology Readiness Level (TRL, according to building sector needs)
    • ESA and space identity
    • Function and ergonomics
    • Appearance and aesthetics
    • Environmental performance level
    • Increasing the wellbeing level
    • Contribution to safety in the building sector
